Sheltered Farming Scheme

 

The Ministry of Ago Industry and Food Security is launching a sheltered farming scheme to encourage farmers to innovate from traditional labour-intensive plantation system under open field to sheltered farming system.  This will enable farmers to withstand the effects of adverse climatic conditions, improve production and the quality of farm produce.

The scheme is open to registered planters cooperative societies and companies operating in the agro-industrial sector and involved in the production of food crops and/or strawberry on not less than 0.211 hectares (0.5 Arpent) of land and shall have an annual turnover of less than 3M Rupees.  The scheme is in the form of a loan at the Development Bank of Mauritius Ltd.

 

New promoters who are already owners of land or who hold leases for at least 7 years and whose projects meet the objectives of the scheme shall be eligible.

 

Maximum loan amount    :      90% of project cost up to maximum of Rs 180,000

Repayment period                      :      7 years inclusive of 2 years moratorium period

Note                                  :     The scheme is valid up to 31 December 2011 or until exhaustion of funds earmarked for the scheme.
